A Tribute to Big Leaf Maple: An Emblem of ʻOlekona!
Big Leaf Maple is an indigenous species in the Pacific Northwest the same way Koa is to Hawaiʻi. The leaves for this plant look very similar to the kukui nut leaves in Hawaiʻi. However, they are very different. The leaves are BIG! These leaves can range on average, up to 12" long compared to the common 4" maple leaf. Many know maple for maple syrup, though not much people realize that maple was also used for medicinal purposes. The hardwood was also used to create tools, canoes, and more for Native American tribes.
